Jim O Callaghan, the Minister for Justice in Republic of Ireland, is considering a scheme to offer financial payments to Ukrainian refugees who voluntarily return to Ukraine. This initiative comes as Republic of Ireland also plans to withdraw state-supplied accommodation for approximately 16,000 Ukrainian refugees on a phased basis starting in August. The Irish government is also engaging with an EU-led voluntary return and reintegration program to Ukraine, expected to commence in March 2027. These measures are being considered in response to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has led to over 125,700 Ukrainian refugees arriving in Republic of Ireland since February 2022. The Ukrainian government has expressed a desire for its citizens to return.
