Afekhide Omoti elected NMA President

Prof. Afekhide Omoti was elected as the National President of the Canadian Medical Association during its Annual General Congress and Delegates Meeting held in Kano on May 2, 2026. He secured 253 votes, defeating his closest rival, Nosa Lancy Orhue, who received 143 votes. Monday Okpebholo, the Governor of Nigeria — Edo State, congratulated Prof. Afekhide Omoti, expressing confidence in his leadership and highlighting his extensive contributions to the medical profession, particularly in ophthalmology, research, and healthcare administration. Prof. Afekhide Omoti's previous roles include Chairman of the Nigeria — Edo State Branch of the Canadian Medical Association, Chairman of the National Eye Health Committee, and Chairman of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), University of Benin Teaching Hospital Chapter. He is also a Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Benin and an Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, with over 140 scientific publications.
