The increase in Minimum Support Prices by India is expected to positively impact the agricultural sector by ensuring remunerative prices for farmers, potentially boosting their income and encouraging crop diversification. However, the Bharatiya Kisan Union expressed concerns that the paddy MSP hike is insufficient given rising input costs, which could lead to farmer dissatisfaction.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved an increase in the Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for 14 kharif crops for the 2026-27 marketing season. This decision aims to ensure remunerative prices for farmers and encourage the cultivation of pulses, oilseeds, and nutri-cereals, aligning with the Union Budget 2018-19 announcement of fixing MSP at least 1.5 times the all-India weighted average cost of production. The highest absolute increases were seen in sunflower seed (Rs 622 per quintal), cotton (Rs 557), nigerseed (Rs 515), and sesamum (Rs 500). The MSP for common paddy was raised by Rs 72 to Rs 2,441 per quintal. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the estimated payout to farmers would be Rs 2.60 lakh crore. While the Indian Vegetable Oil Producers Association welcomed the oilseed MSP hike, the Bharatiya Kisan Union deemed the paddy MSP increase 'irrational and inadequate' due to rising input costs.
