Alleged Plot Against El-Rufai

Timi Frank, former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria — All Progressives Congress, has alleged a plot by top government appointees and the presidency to eliminate former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. Frank claims Nasir El-Rufai's detention on corruption charges by the Nigeria — Independent Corrupt Practices Commission is politically motivated due to his influence in the 2023 presidential election. He also called for the immediate release of businessman Tunde Ayeni, who he alleges is being targeted due to perceived political affiliations and business rivalries, despite previous court rulings in his favor against the Nigeria — Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Frank has urged security agencies to ensure Nasir El-Rufai's safety and has accused some judicial officers of complicity in prolonged detentions through stringent bail conditions. He questioned the disparities in treatment for other former governors facing corruption allegations and warned that the alleged abuse of state institutions could erode public trust in Nigeria's democratic governance. Frank has called on the United States government, international observers, and human rights organizations to monitor developments in Nigeria and advocated for targeted sanctions against officials found culpable of undermining democratic freedoms. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has also condemned Nasir El-Rufai's continued detention, accusing the federal government of selective injustice.
