The spacecraft will investigate the interaction between solar winds and Earth's magnetic shield, making the first-ever X-ray observations of this phenomenon. The mission aims to improve forecasting and preparation for solar storms, which can disrupt satellites, power grids, and communication networks. After detaching at 700 kilometers altitude, SMILE will enter an elliptical orbit, transmitting data to the Bernardo O'Higgins research station and observing auroras for extended periods. The mission, initially planned for April 9 but postponed due to a technical issue, is designed to run for three years.
