Researchers at Umeå University, led by Professor Fredrik Almqvist, have discovered a new class of compounds called TriPcides that show promising antibacterial properties. These compounds effectively target Staphylococcus aureus, including antibiotic-resistant strains like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, by disrupting their ability to cause infection and killing dormant bacterial cells (persister cells) that are typically resistant to existing antibiotics. This discovery, published in Science Advances, offers a potential solution to the growing global threat of antibiotic resistance and could lead to new treatment approaches for severe infections, ultimately alleviating strain on healthcare systems. The study involved an international collaboration, with significant contributions from the Umeå Centre for Microbial Research.
