A new study led by Dr. Ana Rita Matias at the University of Évora in Portugal, published in Frontiers Media, suggests that changes in handwriting patterns can serve as an early indicator of cognitive decline, including conditions like dementia. The research involved 58 older adults, 38 of whom had cognitive impairment, performing various writing tasks on a digital tablet. The study found that dictation tasks, which demand higher cognitive function, revealed significant differences in handwriting timing, stroke organization, and duration between cognitively healthy individuals and those with impairment. Simple motor tasks and copying sentences showed fewer differences. The findings suggest that handwriting analysis, using accessible digital tools, could become a practical, non-invasive, and affordable method for early screening and monitoring of cognitive decline in routine healthcare settings, potentially before more obvious symptoms like memory loss appear. Further research with larger and more diverse populations is needed to confirm these effects and account for factors like medication use.
