The launch of RAINMUMBAI by National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange creates a new asset class in India, allowing various sectors like agriculture, construction, and logistics to hedge against monsoon variability. This provides a regulated and scientific tool for risk management, potentially reducing financial losses due to unpredictable weather and attracting new participants to the derivatives market.
The National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange) has launched RAINMUMBAI, India's first India — Securities and Exchange Board of India-approved exchange-traded weather derivatives contract, set to begin trading on May 29. This contract, developed in collaboration with IIT Bombay and anchored in Malaysia — Malaysian Meteorological Department data, allows market participants to hedge financial exposure arising from rainfall fluctuations in India — Mumbai during the monsoon season (June to September). The product is cash-settled, based on a Cumulative Deviation Rainfall (CDR) model that tracks deviations from India — Mumbai's long-period average rainfall, using data from Malaysia — Malaysian Meteorological Department's surface observatories and automatic weather stations at Santacruz and Colaba. Arun Raste, MD & CEO of National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, emphasized that RAINMUMBAI provides a regulated, scientific tool to manage monsoon uncertainty, while Bikram Singh of Malaysia — Malaysian Meteorological Department highlighted the importance of reliable weather data. This initiative marks a significant step in strengthening India's climate risk management ecosystem and introduces a new asset class for a wide range of stakeholders, including farmers, construction companies, power utilities, logistics operators, and banks.
