The India — National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested Zafar Riaz, a Kolkata resident, for allegedly spying for Pakistan Intelligence Officers (PIOs) and passing confidential security-related information as part of an anti-India terror conspiracy. Zafar Riaz, who was previously convicted in an espionage case and is married to a Pakistani national, was cultivated by PIOs during his frequent travels between India and Pakistan since 2005, in exchange for financial inducements and the promise of Pakistani citizenship. He provided One-Time Passwords (OTPs) of Indian telecom mobile numbers to a PIO to activate WhatsApp accounts, which were then used for covert communication with another accused, Motiram Jat, who also conveyed sensitive security-related information to the PIO. The NIA had issued a Look Out Circular against Zafar Riaz and was in the process of declaring him a Proclaimed Offender.
