India-Cyprus Elevate Strategic Partnership

India and Cyprus have elevated their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership, following extensive talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides. This new partnership aims to significantly deepen cooperation across various sectors, including trade, investment, defense, maritime security, and technology. Key outcomes include the establishment of a joint task force for infrastructure and shipping, a target to double Cypriot investments in India within five years, and agreements on counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, and diplomatic training. Both nations also welcomed the conclusion of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement, with Cyprus positioned as a gateway for Indian investments into Europe. Financial connectivity is being enhanced through the interoperability of India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with the European Union — European Central Bank's Target Instant Payment Settlement System (TIPS). The leaders also discussed global issues such as the Ukraine conflict and West Asia crisis, emphasizing the need for reforms in global institutions. Cyprus reaffirmed its support for India's bid for a permanent seat on a reformed UN Security Council, and India reiterated its support for Cyprus's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The partnership also includes a five-year defense roadmap and plans for migration and social security agreements.
