Mahmoud Khalil deportation appeal to Supreme Court

A federal appeals court, the United States — United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, declined to reconsider a ruling that allows the Trump administration to re-arrest and deport pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil. This decision overturns a previous order by U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz, who had released Mahmoud Khalil from immigration detention. Mahmoud Khalil's lawyers, including Baher Azmy and the American Civil Liberties Union, plan to appeal this ruling to the United States — Supreme Court of the United States, arguing that the 3rd Circuit's decision undermines judicial review of constitutional claims. The United States — United States Department of Homeland Security has welcomed the ruling and intends to enforce Mahmoud Khalil's removal order. Mahmoud Khalil, an Algerian citizen born in Syria, was arrested in March 2025 for his pro-Palestinian activism at Columbia University and faces deportation to Algeria or Syria.
