The signing of this protocol is expected to boost trade and investment between India and Ethiopia, creating new opportunities for businesses in both nations. Ethiopia's closer integration into the World Trade Organization will likely lead to economic and trade policy reforms, potentially attracting more foreign investment and enhancing global value chain participation.
India and Ethiopia signed a bilateral accession protocol in Geneva on May 22, 2026, as a crucial step towards Ethiopia's full membership in the World Trade Organization. This agreement, fast-tracked under the guidance of India's Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal, aims to strengthen trade, investment, and business collaboration between the two nations. The protocol was signed by Ambassador Senthil Pandian C for India and Ambassador Tsegab Kebebew Daka for Ethiopia. India, already Ethiopia's second-largest trading partner and a leading foreign investor, has consistently supported the integration of developing and Least Developed Countries into the multilateral trading system. This move follows the elevation of bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Ethiopia in December 2025. Ethiopia is currently in an advanced stage of its WTO accession process, with its Working Party having met recently.
