Jimmy Carter State Funeral Observances Begin

Six days of funeral observances for former President Jimmy Carter began on Saturday, January 4, in Georgia, following his death on December 29 at the age of 100. The ceremonies honor Jimmy Carter's journey from his hometown of Plains, Georgia, to his role as the 39th President of the United States and a global humanitarian. The initial events include a procession through Plains, a stop at his boyhood home where the United States — National Park Service rang a bell 39 times, and a moment of silence at the Georgia State Capitol led by Governor Brian Kemp and Mayor Andre Dickens. Jimmy Carter's body will lie in repose at Carter Center in Atlanta before being transported to Washington, D.C., to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. A national funeral service will be held at the Washington National Cathedral, with President Joe Biden expected to deliver a eulogy. Following the services, Jimmy Carter will be buried in Plains alongside his late wife, Rosalynn Carter.
