The new policy by Oyo Rooms could negatively impact its market share among unmarried couples and potentially lead to a decline in bookings, especially if expanded to more cities. However, it might also attract a different segment of customers seeking 'family-friendly' environments, potentially balancing the overall market effect.
Oyo Rooms has introduced a new check-in policy for its partner hotels, starting in India — Meerut, India — Uttar Pradesh. This policy, effective immediately, prohibits unmarried couples from checking in and requires all couples to present valid proof of relationship. Oyo Rooms has granted its partner hotels the discretion to decline bookings based on local social norms. Pawas Sharma, Region Head of Oyo Rooms North India, stated that the initiative aims to uphold safe hospitality practices and reshape the brand's perception as family-friendly. The company may expand this policy to other cities based on feedback and has also initiated pan-India efforts like seminars with police and blacklisting hotels involved in immoral activities.
