Scientists in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park are implementing environmental DNA (eDNA) technology to detect and protect endangered species like golden monkeys and mountain gorillas. This technology, introduced by the African Wildlife Foundation in partnership with the Rwandan government, identifies species from genetic material left in soil and water, reducing the need for intrusive field surveys. The project aims to create a comprehensive list of species in Rwanda to combat threats from climate change and population growth. Researchers from the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International are also involved, working to build region-specific genetic databases. While eDNA offers a cost-effective monitoring approach, challenges include the inability to estimate animal populations, the lingering nature of DNA, the need for cold storage, contamination risks, and limited genetic reference libraries in Africa. Despite these limitations, the technology is crucial for conservation, especially as Rwanda expands its national parks by rehabilitating agricultural land, allowing conservationists to track species colonization and detect invasive species.
