Supreme Court Orders Mukhtar Ansari Reports

The India — Supreme Court of India has directed the India — Uttar Pradesh government to provide medical and magisterial inquiry reports concerning the death of jailed gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari. Mukhtar Ansari, a five-time MLA, died on March 28, 2024, allegedly due to cardiac arrest. His son, Umar Ansari, represented by Kapil Sibal, had moved the court seeking these reports, claiming the state government had not furnished them. Prior to his death, Umar Ansari had also sought to transfer his father to a prison outside India — Uttar Pradesh due to fears for his life. The India — Uttar Pradesh government had previously assured the court in 2023 that Mukhtar Ansari's security in Banda jail would be strengthened. Mukhtar Ansari's brother, Afzal Ansari, alleged 'slow poisoning' as the cause of death, a claim denied by authorities. The India — Supreme Court of India has given the India — Uttar Pradesh government two weeks to provide the reports, after which Umar Ansari will have three weeks to respond.
