Angola illegal Gold mine landslide

A deadly landslide occurred on May 23, 2026, at an illegal Gold mining site in Angola's northwestern Angola — Bengo Province, resulting in the deaths of at least 28 people aged 16 to 45. Four individuals were rescued, and search operations have concluded. This incident is considered one of Angola's deadliest illegal mining accidents. The rise in artisanal Gold mining is attributed to Angola's mining diversification drive, as the nation, historically a major Diamond producer, is shifting towards metals like Gold and Copper due to declining Diamond prices and the increasing popularity of synthetic diamonds.
