Researchers at the Shibaura Institute of Technology in Japan, led by Associate Professor Yoshihisa Hirota and Professor Yoshitomo Suhara, have developed novel vitamin K analogues that show significantly enhanced ability to induce the differentiation of neural progenitor cells into neurons. This discovery, published in ACS Chemical Neuroscience on July 3, 2025, offers a potential regenerative approach to treating neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer s disease, Parkinson s disease, and Huntington s disease. The new compounds are approximately threefold more potent than natural vitamin K, can cross the blood-brain barrier, and appear to work through the mGluR1 receptor, a key pathway for neuronal communication.
