Researchers from the University of Rochester, Brown University, and the University of Copenhagen, led by Professor Douglas Kelley, have developed a new approach combining Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and Artificial intelligence (AI) tools to measure fluid flow in the brain. This breakthrough allows for the study of the glymphatic system, which clears metabolic waste linked to diseases such as Alzheimer s disease. The physics-informed AI deduces fluid flow velocities from MRI data, revealing two main flow rates: a fast flow in open brain regions and a much slower flow in deep tissue. This research, supported by the United States — National Institutes of Health, aims to enable earlier diagnosis and better management of neurological disorders by comparing fluid flow in healthy and diseased human brains.
