This allows it to berth Ultra Large Container Vessels and positions it as a globally competitive deep-water transshipment hub. The rapid growth in cargo volumes is expected to reduce India's reliance on foreign ports for transshipment cargo and strengthen its position in global maritime trade networks. Phase 2 expansion, with an investment of approximately ₹16,000 crore, is underway and expected to be completed by 2028.
