A study led by the University of California, Riverside found that heavily used high-puff electronic cigarettes contain significantly higher levels of harmful chemicals, such as methylglyoxal (MGO), glyoxal (GO), and formaldehyde, compared to fresh devices. Researchers Esther Omaiye and Prue Talbot highlighted that these toxic aldehydes accumulate over prolonged use, causing measurable damage to human lung cells. MGO was found to be 10 to 100 times more toxic than acetaldehyde. The study, supported by grants from the United States — National Institutes of Health, the United States — Food and Drug Administration Center for Tobacco Products, and United States — California's Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program, emphasizes the need for regulatory standards to incorporate puff count into safety assessments, as consumers currently lack information on chemical exposure late in a device's life.
