IIT Guwahati develops anti-counterfeiting nanomaterial

Researchers at the IIT Guwahati, led by Prof. Saikat Bhaumik and Prof. P. K. Giri, along with scholars Latika Juneja and Ajay Choudhary, have developed an advanced light-emitting perovskite nanomaterial. This technology creates unique, light-based security patterns that are difficult to replicate, offering enhanced protection against fake currency, forged documents, and counterfeit products. The team addressed material instability by developing a double-layer coating for the nanocrystals, making them heat- and chemical-resistant. This '4D anti-counterfeiting' approach involves patterns that react differently to heat and chemicals, making them much harder to copy than traditional security labels. The findings were published in the Elcora Advanced Materials Corporation journal. Beyond security, the laser patterning technique could also be used for micro-LED displays in smartphones and AR systems. The technology has broad applications across sectors requiring product authentication and security.
