The James Webb Space Telescope has made the first mid-infrared chemical fingerprint of an interstellar object, comet 3i/Atlas, detecting methane gas and confirming unusually high levels of carbon dioxide. These findings, published in The Astrophysical Journal, suggest that 3i/Atlas formed in a chemical environment significantly different from our solar system. Separately, the Ifo Institute for Economic Research conducted extensive radio scans of 3i/Atlas and concluded that the comet is entirely natural, dismissing speculation of alien technology. These results, co-authored by Valeria Garcia Lopez and Sofia Sheikh, were published in The Astronomical Journal. The comet, which is only the third known interstellar object to enter our solar system, was also observed by United States — NASA spacecraft as it passed Mars.
