Africa Pushes Health in Climate Talks

African climate negotiators, led by the African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change Chair Nana Dr Antwi-Boasiako Amoah, are intensifying efforts to integrate health into global climate action. During a Climate and Health Capacity Building Workshop in Germany — Bonn, Germany, ahead of the 64th Session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Subsidiary Bodies, they emphasized that climate change is a public health emergency for Africa. Key partners like World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa, United States — Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Amref Health Africa, and France — French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development are collaborating to strengthen Africa's negotiating position. The discussions focus on securing adaptation finance, developing context-specific health indicators under the Global Goal on Adaptation of the Paris Agreement, and building climate-resilient health systems. The initiative aims to ensure health remains central to climate policy discussions, especially leading up to COP31 and COP32, with a call for developed countries to deliver on climate finance commitments.
