UN Warns AI Environmental Footprint

A United Nations University report warns that the environmental footprint of Data center infrastructure, driven by Artificial intelligence, is set to double by 2030. Last year, global Data center electricity use rivaled that of 10 countries, producing 208 million tons of carbon dioxide and consuming 1.2 trillion gallons of water. By 2030, Data centers are projected to consume 3% of global electricity, produce 440 million tons of carbon dioxide, and require 9.3 trillion liters of water, along with a land footprint nearly ten times the size of Mexico. Kaveh Madani, director of the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health, highlighted the 'Jevons paradox,' where efficiency gains lead to increased overall consumption. The report also points out the structural inequity of AI infrastructure, with 90% concentrated in the United States and China, and calls for transparency, efficiency by design, equity, lifecycle responsibility, global cooperation, and sustainable use in AI development. It emphasizes that 'low-carbon is not automatically low-water or low-land' and urges integrated planning for water, land, and infrastructure limits.
