The divestiture by Rheinmetall of its automotive business to AEQUITA for 350 million euros is a strategic move to focus on its high-growth defense sector. This is expected to positively impact Rheinmetall's stock price and profitability as it sheds a challenging automotive unit and capitalizes on strong defense orders, such as the 5.7 billion euro contract with Romania.
Rheinmetall, a German arms maker, has agreed to sell its automotive business, previously known as its power systems division, to Munich-based industrial group AEQUITA for a provisional price of 350 million euros. This strategic divestiture allows Rheinmetall to concentrate entirely on its burgeoning defense business, which has seen strong orders from governments, particularly NATO members replenishing stocks after diverting weapons to Ukraine. The move follows a significant contract win for Rheinmetall, valued at 5.7 billion euros, to supply Romania with various combat and air defense systems. The automotive sector has been challenging, leading Rheinmetall to book impairments related to the discontinued operation. AEQUITA plans to retain the 6,250 employees of the acquired business, with the deal expected to close in the fourth quarter, pending regulatory approval.
