A new study by UC Davis Health and Kaiser Permanente found that long-term exposure to fine air pollution particles (PM2.5) is associated with lower semantic memory, which is crucial for communication and general knowledge. The research, published in Alzheimer s Association, analyzed data from 740 adults in the Kaiser Permanente Study of Healthy Aging in African Americans. Senior author Kathryn Conlon and co-author Rachel Whitmer highlighted that the effect on semantic memory was greater than expected from 10 years of normal aging. The study also noted that Black adults in the United States experience higher rates of Alzheimer's disease and dementia, and are disproportionately exposed to air pollution.
