Ijebu-Ode gas leaks hospitalize students

Ijebu-Ode, Nigeria — Ogun State, has been hit by a series of gas leaks, with Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Ijebu Ode experiencing its third incident in two months. Scores of students and staff have been hospitalized with breathing difficulties and discomfort, requiring medical attention at the General Hospital, Ijebu Ode. The Nigeria — Ogun State government, through Commissioner for Environment Ola Oresanya, confirmed the incidents and stated that monitoring equipment detected methane gas as the likely source, originating from behind Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Ijebu Ode. A multi-agency environmental and public health assessment team has been activated to investigate the cause and assess health risks. Another school, Anglican Girls Grammar School, Obalende, was also affected in May. Activists like John Eko have appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun for a permanent solution, raising concerns about long-term health implications for residents.
