Congo Ebola Outbreak, Burial Team Attacks

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is grappling with its 17th Ebola outbreak, characterized by a rising number of confirmed cases (363) and deaths (62) since May 15. The Bundibugyo strain of Ebola has spread across 17 health zones in Democratic Republic of the Congo — Ituri Province, seven in Democratic Republic of the Congo — North Kivu, and one in Democratic Republic of the Congo — South Kivu. Response efforts are severely hampered by community mistrust and resistance, leading to attacks on Ebola burial teams. One such incident occurred in Katana, Democratic Republic of the Congo — South Kivu, a town controlled by March 23 Movement rebels, where residents attacked a burial team, forcing them to abandon a coffin. A similar assault took place in Bunia, Democratic Republic of the Congo — Ituri Province, injuring four responders. These incidents highlight the high-risk practice of community members handling infectious bodies, which can fuel further transmission. International organizations like the International Organization for Migration and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies are providing support, including setting up health control posts and supplying burial kits, to aid in containment efforts.
