Astrophysicists at Northwestern University, led by Mark Gorski and Elena Murchikova, have discovered compelling evidence of a powerful wind blowing from Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way. This discovery resolves a 50-year-old mystery in astronomy, as theoretical physics predicted such winds, but they had remained undetected. Using five years of deep observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter Array, the team created the sharpest image yet of cold molecular gas around Sagittarius A*, revealing a cone-shaped cavity. This cavity, nearly one parsec long and 45 degrees wide, is devoid of cold molecular gas, a feature attributed to the hot, energetic wind. Further confirmation came from United States — NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, which had previously pinpointed bright X-ray emissions in the same region. The findings, published in The Astrophysical Journal, confirm that Sagittarius A* is not an outlier and provides a window into the quiet phase of black hole life.
