Bernie Sanders proposes AI nationalization

Senator Bernie Sanders has proposed the 'American AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Act,' which aims to give the public a 50% ownership stake in major American artificial intelligence companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Xai. This would be achieved through a one-time 50% tax on their stock, with the transferred equity routed into a federally managed fund. Sanders argues that AI systems are built on humanity's collective knowledge, and therefore, the wealth generated should benefit all Americans, funding direct payments, healthcare, education, and housing initiatives. The proposal includes giving the federal government voting rights and board representation in these companies. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with Sanders, expressing a desire for public equity in AI but disagreeing with the 50% threshold. Former President Donald Trump has also shown interest in the idea of the American public benefiting from AI's success. However, David Sacks, former White House AI and Crypto Czar, criticized the proposal, warning that government control of AI could lead to a 'CCP-style social credit system' and censorship. The bill faces an uphill battle in Congress, but it has sparked a broader discussion about the future ownership and control of AI, its societal impact, and the role of government in regulating this rapidly evolving technology.
