The development of a compact X-ray telescope by Osaka Metropolitan University could significantly reduce the cost and complexity of future lunar missions, potentially opening up new opportunities for aerospace companies involved in satellite manufacturing and deployment. This breakthrough also enhances the scientific understanding of the Moon, which could indirectly influence investment in space resources and lunar exploration ventures.
Researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University, led by Airi Toida and Prof. Yuichiro Ezoe, have developed a compact X-ray telescope and used simulations to demonstrate its capability to create a complete chemical map of the Moon's surface. This lightweight telescope, weighing less than ten kilograms, is designed for long-term lunar satellite observations and has been tested in harsh radiation environments. Simulations indicate that a single telescope could map five key elements (oxygen, iron, magnesium, aluminum, silicon) across the entire Moon in two years, while a 25-telescope array could achieve this in one year and also map sodium, with improved resolution. This technological advancement aims to overcome limitations faced by previous missions like the Apollo program and Chandrayaan programme, which only produced partial maps, and will provide a crucial tool for understanding the Moon's geological evolution.
