Researchers at ETH Zurich, led by Professor Ursula Quitterer, have developed a chemical compound, 'Compound 10', that shows promise in slowing the progression of Alzheimer's disease. The research, spanning nearly two decades, identified the enzyme GRK2 as a key player in dementia. Inactive GRK2 forms aggregates that damage mitochondria and promote amyloid beta production, creating a vicious cycle. Compound 10 prevents these GRK2 aggregates, improving mitochondrial function, reducing amyloid beta deposits, and preserving nerve cells in mice. The compound also exhibited anti-aging effects. The findings were published in Cell Reports, and ETH Zurich is now seeking a company to advance Compound 10 towards drug development, offering a new mechanism for Alzheimer's treatment.
