A five-day BRICS agriculture meeting commenced in Indore, India, on Tuesday, June 9, under India's chairmanship. The discussions include a three-day Agriculture Working Group meeting, led by Atish Chandra, Secretary of India's Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, followed by a two-day BRICS ministerial meeting from June 12 to 13. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlighted the significance of BRICS as a strong voice for developing countries, noting that BRICS nations account for nearly half the world's population and a substantial portion of global agricultural land and produce. Ajit Kumar Sahu, Joint Secretary (International Cooperation), emphasized the importance of ensuring food and nutritional security for the BRICS population. The meeting will deliberate on topics including nutrition, climate-resilient agriculture, supply chains, digital agriculture, research, knowledge exchange, artificial intelligence, and robotics. A joint declaration is anticipated after the BRICS agriculture ministers reach a consensus. The event coincides with Madhya Pradesh's declaration of 2026 as the 'Year of Farmer Welfare'.
