Scientists have confirmed the establishment of the invasive bloody red shrimp in Lake Superior, making it the final of the five Great Lakes to host the species. Researchers, led by Donn Branstrator of the University of Minnesota Duluth, collected dozens of adult and juvenile specimens, including pregnant females, in Duluth-Superior Harbor in 2025. The shrimp, native to the Caspian and Black Sea regions, likely arrived in North America via ballast water from transoceanic cargo ships. First detected in the Great Lakes in 2006 in waters connected to United States — Michigan and Canada — Ontario, it was established in Lake Huron and Lake Erie by 2008. The ecological consequences are uncertain, but research in Europe has linked its presence to major reductions in zooplankton biomass and diversity. There is currently no known effective population control for the bloody red shrimp in natural water bodies.
