A new trial conducted across three hospitals in Australia, involving 8,870 patients, has revealed that a simple oral care intervention, including toothbrushing, can reduce the risk of non-ventilator hospital-acquired pneumonia by 60%. This type of pneumonia affects approximately 50,000 patients annually in Australian hospitals, leading to around 1,900 deaths. The intervention involved providing patients with toothbrushes and toothpaste upon admission, educating patients and staff on oral care importance, assisting patients with brushing, and auditing oral care delivery. The study, published in Emerging Infectious Diseases, highlights that improved oral hygiene, which increased from 16% to 62% among patients, significantly reduces bacterial buildup in the mouth, preventing lung infections. This research challenges the assumption that hospital-acquired pneumonia is unavoidable and advocates for including oral care in national infection-prevention guidelines and nursing practice, potentially saving lives and reducing healthcare costs.
