Estonia launches new eID cards

Estonia, in partnership with Thales Group, has launched a new generation of electronic identity (eID) cards, marking a significant advancement in its digital identity program. The Estonia — Estonian Police and Border Guard Board has begun issuing these cards, which feature cutting-edge embedded security elements and upgradeable software to combat emerging cyber threats. This eight-year contract with Thales Group covers the full lifecycle of national identity documents, ensuring stronger protection against fraud and enhanced electronic features. The solution is compliant with eIDAS, a European Union regulation, providing citizens with high standards of security and interoperability for digital services across Europe.
