A new study by the University of Florida, published in Nature Metabolism, has found an association between the widely used joint supplement Glucosamine and a faster progression of Alzheimer s disease. Researchers, led by Ramon Sun, analyzed over a decade of deidentified health records and found that patients with mild cognitive impairment taking Glucosamine were 25% more likely to progress to full dementia. Among those already diagnosed with Alzheimer s disease, Glucosamine use was linked to a 25% higher risk of dying within five years. The study also included experiments on mouse models and human brain tissue, suggesting that Glucosamine may exacerbate protein glycosylation, a process already overactive in Alzheimer's brains. While the researchers, including Matt Gentry, emphasize that the study shows association, not causation, they urge individuals, especially older adults with early signs of memory loss, to discuss their supplement use with a doctor.
