A research team at the University of Zurich, led by Thomas Kraemer and with significant contributions from Michael Scholz, has discovered 10 biomarkers in saliva that can reliably detect acute sleep deprivation. This scientific milestone, published in the American Chemical Society's Journal of Proteome Research, involved a study of 20 healthy young men under various sleep conditions. The findings suggest the potential for developing a rapid, non-invasive test to objectively measure fatigue, which could significantly enhance road safety and improve safety in critical work environments where attention and concentration are paramount. The project is now moving into a large-scale international field study to validate these patented biomarkers under real-world conditions.
