Researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University, in collaboration with Iida Group Holdings, have developed a self-regulating artificial photosynthesis system that produces solar fuel, specifically Formic acid, without the need for batteries. This innovation, led by Associate Professor Yasuo Matsubara and Professor Yutaka Amao, integrates a special solid electrolyte directly into the electrolyzer, allowing it to automatically adjust its electrical characteristics based on sunlight levels. This eliminates the costly and complex battery-based Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) systems typically used. The prototype successfully produced Formic acid consistently under real outdoor sunlight, demonstrating a simpler and potentially cheaper path to clean energy storage. The findings were published in EES Solar.
