Lake Velence Drying Crisis

Hungary — Lake Velence, Hungary's third-largest lake, is facing an unprecedented environmental crisis as its water level is expected to drop to new historic lows this summer. This dire situation is attributed to a combination of climate change, leading to prolonged droughts and lack of rainfall, and decades of flawed water management, including the draining of wetlands for agricultural use. The current water level of 56 cm is just 3 cm above the historic low recorded in 2022, and experts, including Tibor Horanyi from the Association of Great Lakes, warn it could fall to 30 cm by summer's end. This decline threatens the lake's ecosystem, including reed beds, waterfowl, and fish, and severely impacts the local tourism industry, with businesses like Peter Szaniszlo's sailing school relocating to Hungary — Lake Balaton. Environmental Minister Laszlo Gajdos has met with local stakeholders and pledged government action to improve water quality, implement sustainable water replenishment, and rehabilitate the shoreline. However, Loránd Eötvös, mayor of Gardony, acknowledges that replenishing the lake will take time, emphasizing the need for adaptation to changing climate conditions.
