The launch of Pine Labs' P3P is expected to significantly boost the agentic commerce market in India, potentially leading to increased transaction volumes and new business models for companies like Gullak and Vijay Sales. This innovation could attract further investment into the fintech sector and enhance the efficiency of digital payments, positively impacting the broader Indian economy.
Pine Labs, a prominent Indian merchant commerce platform, has launched the Pine Labs Payment Protocol (P3P), an AI-driven payment infrastructure that enables AI agents to complete Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions without requiring real-time human authentication. This protocol extends UPI's existing mandate framework, allowing consumers to authorize payments upfront, thereby enabling AI agents to browse, select, negotiate, and pay autonomously within specified limits. The P3P system incorporates Grantex for verifiable identity, delegated authorization, spend controls, and auditability, ensuring secure transactions. Gullak, a digital gold savings platform, is already utilizing P3P, allowing users to set rules for autonomous gold purchases. Vijay Sales, an electronics retail chain, is also testing the protocol to enable AI-driven product purchases at target prices. Pine Labs plans to expand P3P beyond UPI to include major card networks, positioning India to lead the global agentic commerce market, which is projected to reach $65.47 billion by 2033.
