The release of the CKM syndrome guideline is expected to significantly impact the healthcare industry by promoting earlier screening and integrated care, potentially increasing demand for GLP-1-based therapies and SGLT2 inhibitors. Pharmaceutical companies producing these medications, as well as medical device companies involved in diagnostics, may see increased market opportunities. The emphasis on lifestyle modifications could also boost the wellness and nutrition sectors.
On June 9, 2026, the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, and American Society of Nephrology released the first-ever guideline for cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome. This guideline provides a comprehensive framework for the prevention, detection, evaluation, and management of CKM syndrome, which affects nearly 90% of adults in the United States with at least one risk factor. Key aspects include a four-stage classification system for CKM syndrome, the use of PREVENT equations for improved cardiovascular disease risk assessment, and recommendations for screening social determinants of health. The guideline emphasizes healthy lifestyle behaviors, coordinated interdisciplinary care, and the use of medications like GLP-1-based therapies and SGLT2 inhibitors, as well as bariatric and metabolic surgeries for treatment. Chiadi E. Ndumele, chair of the writing committee, highlighted the focus on early screening and prevention to reduce serious complications.
