A study conducted by researchers including Damien Mather, Goetz Laible, and Kara Xiaohui Ma from the University of Otago and the Auckland University of Technology, surveyed nearly 1,100 New Zealand consumers to understand their willingness to purchase gene-edited milk. The research aimed to assess trade-offs consumers would make when faced with real purchasing decisions, comparing conventional, organic, and three forms of gene-edited milk (standard, allergy-free, and COVID-protection). The findings indicate that while conventional milk remains the most preferred, consumer resistance to gene-edited milk is not fixed and can be overcome by lower prices and clear personal benefits, such as allergy-free options. This suggests a potential pathway for gene-editing technologies to address challenges like heat stress in New Zealand's dairy farming and reduce methane emissions, provided producers focus on transparent messaging, affordability, and tangible consumer advantages.
