A new study by Osaka Metropolitan University, led by Associate Professor Atsushi Hinenoya, has identified a pathway for the transmission of the infectious bacterium Escherichia albertii from invasive raccoons to humans. The research, conducted in Japan — Ōita Prefecture, Japan, found Escherichia albertii in 77% of water samples and 56% of wild raccoons, with strains carrying genes linked to severe human diarrheal disease. This discovery suggests that wildlife, rather than human activity, is introducing the bacterium into rivers, posing a significant public health risk through contaminated food and water. The researchers advocate for a 'One Health' approach to disease control and plan further investigations into contamination routes.
