Cambodia achieves 95-95-95 HIV targets

Cambodia has become the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to achieve the global 95-95-95 HIV targets, a milestone hailed as a 'historic achievement' by Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS. These targets mean that 95% of people living with HIV know their status, 95% of those diagnosed are receiving antiretroviral treatment, and 95% of those on treatment have achieved viral suppression. This success positions Cambodia on track to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. The achievement is attributed to strong political commitment, national leadership, long-term partnerships, and community trust, as noted by Eamonn Murphy, Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS regional director. Cambodia's strategy includes expanded access to HIV testing and treatment, multi-month dispensing of antiretroviral medicines, integration of HIV services into the wider health system, and availability of new prevention options like long-acting PrEP and HIV self-testing. Despite this progress, challenges such as stigma, discrimination, and low awareness about HIV persist, with an estimated 958 new infections in 2025. Senior Minister Ieng Mouly and Health Minister Chheang Ra emphasized the need for sustained progress through increased domestic investment and continued innovation in HIV services. Prime Minister Hun Manet also affirmed the government's commitment to a people-centered approach and continued collaboration with Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS.
