Court Upholds JAMB Dismissal of Yisa Usman

The National Industrial Court in Abuja dismissed a lawsuit filed by Yisa Usman, a former Deputy Director of the Nigeria — Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, challenging his dismissal from service. Justice Osatohanmwen Obaseki-Osaghae ruled that the dismissal was lawful and in compliance with the board's staff manual, also awarding ₦250,000 in costs against Yisa Usman in favor of Nigeria — Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. Yisa Usman was dismissed in July 2023 for gross misconduct and willful disobedience of authority. The court found that he was granted a fair hearing, despite his refusal to appear before the disciplinary committee. It also affirmed the power of the Nigeria — Federal Ministry of Interior (Nigeria) to approve the dismissal in the absence of a Governing Board. Furthermore, the court clarified that Yisa Usman's dismissal was unrelated to his alleged whistleblowing activities, as his petitions against Nigeria — Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board officials, including Ishaq Oloyede, had been investigated by agencies like the Nigeria — Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and Nigeria — Independent Corrupt Practices Commission and found to be baseless.
