India reported a current account surplus of $4.7 billion in April 2026, a significant improvement from a deficit of $4.8 billion in the same month last year. This surplus was primarily driven by a surge in services exports and higher remittances from Indians working abroad. Net services exports rose to $18.6 billion, and net transfers increased to $16 billion. On the capital account, net Foreign direct investment into India increased to $7.4 billion. However, net Foreign portfolio investment recorded an outflow of $8.7 billion, and banking capital also saw a net outflow. The overall Balance of Payments registered a deficit of $6.6 billion in April 2026. The State Bank of India released these preliminary figures and announced that monthly BoP data will now be released by the 15th day of the second subsequent month.
