Pakistan is set to assume the chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's (SCO) Council of Heads of State (CHS) in September and will host the next CHS summit in 2027. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced this milestone, emphasizing the SCO's role in promoting regional peace, security, stability, economic cooperation, and connectivity over its 25-year history. Pakistan's increased involvement, from observer to full member in 2017, reflects growing trust in its leadership. Pakistan will pursue an agenda focused on economic collaboration, regional connectivity, and mutual understanding. The country has already hosted the Council of Heads of Government meeting in October 2024, chairs the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure for 2025-26, and leads the working group on poverty alleviation. The China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is highlighted as a model for regional economic integration. The SCO, comprising 10 member states including India, Iran, China, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, along with observer states Afghanistan and Mongolia, continues to evolve as a forum for trade and economic development.
