The financing package is expected to significantly boost Egypt's renewable energy sector and improve its electricity infrastructure, leading to increased investment opportunities in clean energy and related technologies. This will likely attract European companies seeking business opportunities in the region, while also enhancing Egypt's energy security and its role as a regional energy hub, potentially impacting future energy trade across the Mediterranean.
Egypt and the European Union have deepened their strategic partnership in renewable energy with a financing package of up to €690 million to upgrade and expand the Egyptian electricity network. This package includes a €600 million loan from the European Investment Bank's development arm, EIB Global, and up to €90 million in grants from the International — European Commission. The project, led by the Electricite du Laos Transmission Company Limited, aims to integrate 22 gigawatts of renewable-energy capacity into the grid by 2030, enough to supply around 10 million households. This initiative supports Egypt's national energy priorities, strengthens electricity infrastructure, and enhances the country's role as a regional energy hub. It also advances the objectives of the EU-Egypt Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership and is one of the first concrete operations under the Trans-Mediterranean Renewable Energy and Clean-Tech Cooperation Initiative (T-MED).
